You are Listening to Indian AI Music.
These pieces of music are generated by the AI-Raga and AI-Tala systems without any human intervention
Imagine an AI that channels the spirit of Raga Bhupali at dawn and Raga Yaman at dusk-Dr. Vinod Vidwans’s Creative AI System for Indian music does just that. Marrying the logic of ancient treatises like Bharata’s Nāṭyaśāstra and Sharṅgadeva’s Saṅgīta Ratnākara with modern machine intelligence, this rule-based AI marvel composes a complete Bandish in any chosen Rāga wholly on its own, without sampling a database of melodies. It weaves precise ālāps, tāns, and swara-vistara by encoding foundational concepts-āroha, avaroha, vadi, samvadi-into its inference engine, then renders the output in authentic classical style. Beyond generating music, it produces a detailed textual score for analysis, inviting learners and scholars to explore each rule-driven twist and turn. Tested on Ragas from Hamsadhwani to Malakauns, it never repeats itself, forever offering fresh compositions that resonate with centuries-old tradition and futuristic wonder. In our vision, AI becomes both muse and disciple-revealing new horizons where algorithms and ālāp coalesce in an endless dance of creative discovery
Dr. Vinod Vidwans, presently a professor at FLAME University, Pune, is a computational musicologist. He holds a Master’s Degree in Design from the Industrial Design Center, IIT Bombay. He earned his PhD in Cognitive Philosophy from IIT Bombay. It was here that he first became enamored with the possibilities of Computational Indian Music.
Know MoreThe traditional ‘Gyana-Samvid’ (Repository of Knowledge) of Indian music can be documented, and preserved in the form of `smart’ digital repositories, `smart’ books and `smart’ systems. The advent of the smart technologies and the Artificial Intelligence has created many pathways to document, preserve, simulate and even interpret this ‘Gyana-Samvid’ innovatively. Artificial Intelligence provides an excellent opportunity to empirically verify and validate the Indic knowledge using technology & simulation on computers. In this sense Indian Music is the ideal candidate for developing expert and ‘Smart’ Systems for Indian Music that leads to the Artificial Musical Intelligence.
In this context Artificially Intelligent Expert Systems for Indian Music called ‘Bharati’, ‘AI Tala’, ‘AIRagaGen’, and ‘AI Raga’ have been designed and developed by the author of this book. These smart systems are based on 28th Chapter of Bharata’s Natyashastra known as ‘Sangeetadhyaya’ mainly, and for detailed referencing and fine-tuning Abhinav Bharati and Sangeet Ratnakar have been referred. Bharati system has helped the author to study Natyashastra from computational point of view and prepared the right context for the development of GTIM. ‘AI Tala’, ‘AIRagaGen’, and ‘AI Raga’ systems are the manifestations of the GTIM. A brief overview of these systems is presented here.
Dr. Vinod Vidwans has been engaged in designing musical instruments for many years. So far, he has designed Bharat Veena (Shruti Veena), Shruti Mandalam, Brihad Shruti Manadalam, Shruti Guitar, Flexi-Flute Algoza, Flexi-Flute Scale Shift, Flexi-Flute Pitch Variations, and many more in the pipeline. All the musical instruments designed by Dr. Vinod Vidwans have been granted patents by appropriate authorities.
Professor Vinod Vidwans’s artificially intelligent creative expert system generates a bandish (a musical composition) in a given raga and renders it in traditional classical style
It is an immense pleasure to share Raga Compositions, Tala Compositions, PPTs, and Videos based on Dr. Vidwans’s research in the domain of Artificial Intelligence and Indian music. These are presented at various occasions for variety of audiences.
You can circulate these among academicians and musicologists. You may upload these on your websites, blogs, digital repositories/ library with appropriate acknowledgement and share it with interested persons. The author would be happy to receive your comments and observations to take the discussion forward on AI and Indian Music.
